One of the outstanding attractions of Bodrum is the
Castle of St. Peter. Now converted to a museum it is located on the
blue bay the
meeting
point
of
Aegean and the
Mediterranean Seas.
Its construction started in Eleventh century by Knights of St. John, a group of expatriates who drew their ranks from Europe and initially a church and hospital set up for pilgrims in Jerusalem. It took 99 years for the completion of the construction of the castle .It consists of 5 towers.
It is one of the best preserved monuments of the medieval times ,excavations revealing many happenings of history. In its days, the castle was a monumental symbol of the unity of Christian Europe against the ascending power of the Ottomans. underwater excavations are continuing in the Bodrum area, funded and operated by an American-based archaeological group.
Students also come from around the world to assist and learn the intricacies of underwater excavation and preservation. |
